After completing her last body of work called the CL series, which are pure abstractions based on light and color, Jennifer Lynch felt the need to return to structure. She developed new painting images directly from her previous work by overlaying them with an irregular crystalline grid and transformed them digitally into new compositions. Lynch found this to be an engaging and creative process, utilizing the computer as her sketchbook as she had used her camera in the past.
After developing a number of digital sketches, Lynch began transferring the images to the panels; in order to do this she had to draw the outline of the forms within the composition. These line drawings became the matrix for the prints.
Both the paintings and the prints are a continuation of Lynch’s interest in color, the color of light, and how it changes through out the day and how it identifies a sense of place. By investigating the same structure in two different ways (painting, prints) she found they created a polarity in this sense of place. While the prints seem rooted in the terrestrial and the origins of something being built, the paintings convey a more celestial aspect and one of dissolution.
